Symbolic LogicApril 15 - May 31, 2014Opening Reception: April 15, 2013 from 7:00-9:00pm
Expressionist lines, geometrical abstractions, surreal alterations and mythical figures are some of the visual clues presented in “Symbolic Logic”. The exhibition brings together 10 contemporary art practises from a cross-generational group of artists. “Symbolic Logic” demonstrates how paintings and their idiosyncratic set of symbols can polarise illusionary worlds.

George Boole in his study on Aristotelian logic aimed at creating a system of symbols and codes for translating the vagueness, equivocations and confusions deriving from ordinary language.

In a similar manner works in “Symbolic Logic” retain an inherent and codified language. Instead of subsuming to the incoherency of their codes, these works allow their visual narrative to penetrate the contingent logic of its symbols. In an interplay between realistic signs and optical abstractions, the viewer is able to dissolve into the enigmatic power of the works.

…more scratched eyeballs

Beach towel.

Thousands of worms. Sat flat under grease arse.
Eating themselves to keep you from the world.
Every time a layer.
The skin needs help. Rub it some.
The patio is harsh. Drop it one.

More worms now. Slipping across eyes.
Much too bright the sky out here. All blush blue and magic.
Dancing round slick fingers all raised up.
These eyes are ruined. Scratched to bits.

Here by the pool or gallery wall.
Hard to escape these yokes made mess.
Chasing skid worms round render.
Find me a picture to get some rest.

Or

Plink Plink!

Give me plates. Or fat shrimp splat flat.
Chuck me ice. Rocks on the rocks on rocks.
Lose me on the dancefloor. Or just curl me a straw.
Papa Shango is an olive pip.
Leave the party in a lobster claw.

Throw all that you have. We’re rolling now.
Keep these goggles busy.
With bubbles and more.

Scratches will pass. Worms will sink low.
Glass comes up right
Scrubs up well.

Pampered.
All oiled and ripe and new each time.
You’re not made for this.

(48HOURS is a series of weekend long shows curated by Suzannah Pettigrew)
