FOLD Gallery | London is proud to present ‘Magic 8 Ball’ – a show which brings together
seven artists whose work offers a presentation of experiential chance.
The exhibition describes a way of seeing; an understanding of physical space as conceptually
constructed and aesthetically loaded images and objects. The artists in Magic 8 Ball display a
kaleidoscopic re-evaluation of aesthetics, from art historical references to the commonality of
the everyday experience. They expand this experience using the media of video, sculpture,
drawing and painting often blurring the divisions between.
Works displayed are from varying practices – and are not meant to offer associative
connections with each other – but rather describe the exhibition as a form of material
components and ostensible subject matter. Sources range from the industrial to the domestic,
design and architecture, presenting work at the intersection of imagery and object-hood.
Perspective shifts, physical forms and surface texture engage the viewer offering a vision of
abstraction or at least the contemplation on the currency of the term.
In many cases the works are removed from serial investigations, both blocking its intended
contextualisation and revealing its import by participating in an accordion-like action of
revelation and obduracy. Alternatively, the distinct materials and scales allows the work to
be read as signs and symbols as well as to be seen for themselves, thus briefly obviating a
given work’s metaphysical references.

Best Haircuts In History
On the morning of February 2nd, I woke up from a vivid dream. In the dream I had staged an exhibition in a traditional men’s hairdressers in Soho, London. The work or artists in the show were not clear. Just the fact the show was in a hair dresser’s in Soho, London. I didn’t pay too much notice to the dream, but did for some reason decided to update my Facebook status with the details of the previous night’s dream. As soon as I posted the update, people from all around the world started commenting that I should do the show. All day it continued. I thought it was a funny idea, but didn’t really pay it much more attention. Then about two weeks later I was in Soho for a meeting and I happened to work past Gino’s hairdressers, on Dean Street. The old fashioned gents’ hairdressers looked very much like the place in my dream. So I thought I’d go in and have a look.
Inside I spoke to the manger and rather sheepishly told him about my dream. He said I should speak to the people down stairs. This is where I met the team from WE ARE CUTS. I told them about the dream and the idea of doing an exhibition in their place and they kind of liked it. We spoke a couple more times and eventually came up with the idea of a show about The Best Haircuts in History.
The idea of The Best Haircuts show is to take historic haircuts and have contemporary artists make works to celebrate these.
