Best Haircuts In History
On the morning of February 2nd, I woke up from a vivid dream. In the dream I had staged an exhibition in a traditional men’s hairdressers in Soho, London. The work or artists in the show were not clear. Just the fact the show was in a hair dresser’s in Soho, London. I didn’t pay too much notice to the dream, but did for some reason decided to update my Facebook status with the details of the previous night’s dream. As soon as I posted the update, people from all around the world started commenting that I should do the show. All day it continued. I thought it was a funny idea, but didn’t really pay it much more attention. Then about two weeks later I was in Soho for a meeting and I happened to work past Gino’s hairdressers, on Dean Street. The old fashioned gents’ hairdressers looked very much like the place in my dream. So I thought I’d go in and have a look.
Inside I spoke to the manger and rather sheepishly told him about my dream. He said I should speak to the people down stairs. This is where I met the team from WE ARE CUTS. I told them about the dream and the idea of doing an exhibition in their place and they kind of liked it. We spoke a couple more times and eventually came up with the idea of a show about The Best Haircuts in History.
The idea of The Best Haircuts show is to take historic haircuts and have contemporary artists make works to celebrate these.
